The Position:

The Director of Finance will be a key member of Thrive’s leadership team and will have overall responsibility for the finances and accounting strategy of Thrive Properties and its affiliates. The successful candidate will have the ability to translate complex financial information for use in real-time decision-making and will constantly and consistently analyze current practices in order to implement best practices and contribute to future growth.

Working as a collaborative leader, the Director of Finance will be responsible for all accounting functions across multiple entities, evaluating and implementing accounting and internal control systems, evaluating and managing financial aspects of real estate and development projects, working with lenders and other stakeholders in the evaluation and implantation of project financing, and handling the accumulation and consolidation of financial data for internal and external financial statements.

Who we’re looking for:

The ideal candidate would also have experience in development, commercial real estate and tax planning strategy.

Organizational Strategy and Results:

  • Together with the leadership team, develops the strategy to ensure that the organization has the financial resources needed to achieve its current and future goals, while mitigating financial and operational risk
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with key financial partners including funders, investors, partners, government agencies, consultants, and vendors

Financial Management and Reporting:

  • Oversees organizational budgeting, accounting and cash management to ensure accurate reporting, interpretation and analysis of financial results in conjunction with forecasts and long range plans
  • Works collaboratively with external auditors on year end & financial reporting requirements
  • Establishes and maintains internal controls to safeguard assets; documents and recommends improvements to internal financial policies and procedures
  • Develops and completes timely financial statements and reports on transactions and information requests
  • Manages and monitors the organization’s cash flow and development capital requirements
  • Optimizes the investment of funds in accordance with the Company’s investment policy
  • Supervises the day to day accounting operations that includes, but are not limited to, month/year end close, accounts receivable & payable, financial reports, payroll, invoicing, cash receipts and disbursements
  • Maintains various liability and insurance policies

Real Estate Development and Asset Management: 

  • Works collaboratively with Thrive’s Management team to review potential acquisitions, developments, debt, equity, and investment scenerios and proposals
  • Reviews key legal agreements, including mortgages and loan documents as part of financing and construction strategies that may involve various forms of CMHC financing

The following skills and qualifications would be considered a definite asset:

  • CPA/CA designation preferred
  • 5-8 years of demonstrated relevant finance and accounting experience
  • University degree in accounting and/or finance is required
  • Experience in real estate and development will be considered a strong asset
  • Knowledge of and experience with CMHC policy is considered an asset
  • Keen understanding and attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to act as a representative and ambassador for our organization
  • Ability to interact comfortably with the executive management team and ownership
  • Ability to coach, manage and train accounting and administrative staff
